About

New Zealand welcomes experienced, high-value investors to help build globally successful Kiwi businesses.

You can settle, or spend considerable time here, enjoying all our beautiful country has to offer.

It's all part of our commitment to welcoming overseas investors who contribute to our sustainable prosperity and growth.

At a high level, the visa requires the investor to:

  • invest a total of between NZ$5 million and NZ$15 million (depending on a weighting system that incentivizes more 'active' investments)

  • invest across three years and maintain the investment for a further fourth year

  • spend 117 days in New Zealand across the four-year conditional visa period

  • have a reasonable command of English to at least Level 5 of the International English Language Testing System.

Acceptable investment classes

The Active Investor Plus visa offers four different investment options and allows investors to invest across a combination of these.

  1. Direct investments provide the opportunity for investors to connect with and directly impact New Zealand businesses. Direct investments receive the highest weighting, with every $1 invested counting as $3 towards their visa conditions (3x). For example, an investor could meet the required investment amount by investing NZ$5m into direct investments (3 x NZ$5m = NZ$15m).

  2. Invest in one of New Zealand’s many innovative managed funds e.g. private equity, venture capital. Every $1 an investor invests into managed funds, counts as $2 towards their visa conditions (2x). For example, an investor could meet the required investment amount by investing NZ$7.5m into managed funds (2 x NZ$7.5m = NZ$15m).

  3. Invest in New Zealand-listed equities, such as shares on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX). No weighting is applied to this investment option (1x).

  4. Build a better future for New Zealand through philanthropy. No weighting is applied to this investment option (1x).

Entrepreneur Work & Residence visa pathway may be more suited for you.

Starting a business: Entrepreneur Work Visa

You can apply for this visa if you have a business plan, and want to work in your own business in New Zealand.

You must have NZD $100,000 to invest, and claim 120 points on the INZ's points scale.

You can stay 12 months in the start-up stage of your visa, then another 24 months once your business is set up.

If your business is in the science or ICT sectors and shows a high level of innovation or export potential, your NZD $100,000 capital investment requirement may get waived.

Residence Pathway: Entrepreneur Resident Visa

You can apply for this visa if you have been self-employed in New Zealand for at least 6 months, or have operated a self-employed business for 2 years on another visa.

With this visa, you can continue your business  in NZ and stay here indefinitely.

You can include your partner, and dependent children aged 24 and under, in your visa application.

If you apply after less than 2 years of being self-employed, you'll need to have an Entrepreneur Work Visa, have invested capital of at least NZ $500,000 and have created 3 new jobs in New Zealand.
