The New Zealand Government has announced major updates that make it easier for skilled trades professionals to apply for residence. From 18 August 2025, 10 trades occupations will be added to the Work to Residence Green List pathway—opening the door to thousands of skilled migrants seeking a future in Aotearoa.

New Trades Eligible for Work to Residence (from August 2025):

If you have current employment or an offer of employment in one of these roles, and have worked in New Zealand for at least 24 months in the relevant trade, you may be eligible to apply for residence:

  1. Metal Fabricator

  2. Metal Machinist (First Class)

  3. Fitter (General)

  4. Fitter and Turner

  5. Fitter Welder

  6. Pressure Welder

  7. Welder

  8. Panel Beater

  9. Vehicle Painter

  10. Paving Plant Operator

These additions reflect the Government’s effort to recognize essential skills and address workforce shortages in New Zealand’s key industries.

Eligibility Criteria for Work to Residence Visa:

From 18 August 2025, applicants working in one of the new Green List trades can apply if they:

  1. Have a job or job offer in one of the above occupations

  2. Are aged 55 or under at the time of applying for residence

  3. Meet health, character, and English language requirements

  4. Have at least 24 months of relevant NZ work experience in the occupation by the time of application

  5. Meet wage thresholds specific to their occupation

Wage Requirements by Occupation:

To qualify under the Work to Residence pathway, the following wage thresholds apply:

  1. The following occupations must earn at least $38.59/hour (or $80,267/year based on 40 hours/week):

    1. Panel Beater

    2. Vehicle Painter

    3. Paving Plant Operator

  2. All the other occupations from the list above must earn at least $43.63/hour (or $90,750/year based on 40 hours/week)

These rates are aligned with New Zealand’s skill demands and ensure a fair reflection of qualifications and experience.

Median Wage Update:

Also coming into effect on 18 August 2025 is the annual wage threshold update for skilled residence visa categories, including:

  1. Skilled Migrant Category

  2. Work to Residence

  3. Straight to Residence

The new median wage is set at $33.56/hour, based on Statistics New Zealand’s June 2024 data. This adjustment reflects market conditions and helps ensure immigration settings stay responsive to labour demand.
