The Accreditation Process

Before you can invite a worker to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) you must apply for employer accreditation, advertise the role if you need to, and apply for a Job Check.

Levels of Accreditation

Standard accreditation - for hiring up to 5 migrants.
High-volume accreditation - for hiring 6 or more migrants.
Franchisee accreditation.
Controlling third-party accreditation - for those placing migrants with third parties while being the direct employer.

Advertise the role & apply for a job check

Before you can apply for a Job Check you may need to advertise to check there are no New Zealanders available for the job.

Once the advertising has been completed, apply for the Job Check if you haven't found any suitable New Zealander for the role.

Once the job check is approved, the migrant worker can apply for the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

Hiring from overseas requires patience and perseverance. It can be a more complex, costly, and time-consuming process than hiring locally. We present some expert pointers below that may make your overseas hiring process a bit easier.

Getting Ready - Planning

Things to consider when thinking about hiring overseas:

Check that your job vacancy meets the requirements of one of the visa categories.
Find out what you need to do to support a migrant’s visa application
Determine which country or countries you are likely to find suitable candidates in.
Some countries have rules and regulations that you may need to consider when recruiting.
Set realistic timeframes. Factor in time for your employment & visa application processes and your migrant worker’s preparations for moving, which may include selling their home, gathering documents for their visa application, and getting occupational registration if needed.

The time it will take to get someone started.
Who will manage the process?
How will you deal with a huge response?

Promoting the vacancy & Selection

Things to consider when promoting your job vacancy overseas:

Where you will advertise your position? Your website, job websites, trade publications, migration or recruitment expos.
Bear in mind that you may not get a good response during overseas holiday periods.
Are there hiring events within your industry or overseas migration shows that you can attend?

Things to consider when selecting an overseas migrant worker:

The way you word your interview questions can affect how well a migrant candidate understands you. It can also affect the quality of the response they give. Therefore, be clear in your communication and what you are looking for in the answers to the interview questions.
Migrant candidates may be unfamiliar with common questioning techniques used in New Zealand. For example, behavioral interviewing is not commonly used in some parts of the world. Therefore, give the candidate enough time to think about their answer and respond.

Hiring from the Philipines

New Zealand employers wanting to hire overseas Filipino workers must:

meet the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) rules and regulations
check that the worker has approval to leave the Philippines
use a DMW licensed recruitment agent (if required).

Before you start overseas recruitment, you or your agent must contact the POLO about:

the Philippines requirements for hiring overseas Filipino workers
how to apply for Foreign Employer accreditation.

If you are hiring 6 or more Filipino workers you must use a DMW licensed agent.

If you want to hire an agent to manage the recruitment process. You can hire:

a New Zealand agent to engage a licensed DMW recruitment agent in the Philippines
an approved DMW-licensed New Zealand agent
a Philippines-based DMW licensed recruitment agent.
