Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced significant updates to the Job Check stage of the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme, with changes coming into effect from Monday, 29 September 2025. The redesign aims to make the process clearer, more efficient, and user-friendly for employers, immigration advisers, and professionals.
What is the Job Check?
The job check is a critical part of the AEWV process. It ensures that:
The role being offered is genuine
The pay rate meets or exceeds market standards
Terms and conditions are suitable
Employers have made genuine attempts to recruit New Zealanders first
By streamlining this stage, INZ aims to reduce processing delays and support faster decisions for compliant employers.
Key Improvements in the Job Check Redesign
The new online job check form introduces a more intuitive and structured application process, with several notable enhancements:
Clearer guidance throughout the form, so users understand exactly what to provide.
Built-in checks to ensure required information is included before submission.
Streamlined sections aligned with updated immigration requirements.
These changes are the result of feedback from employers, advisers, and immigration staff who regularly use the system.
New Information Required Upfront
Employers will now be asked to provide additional information at the start of their application, including:
Why the role is needed
The size of the business
How many New Zealanders are currently employed (approximations allowed for large organisations)
Submitting this information upfront will help minimise follow-ups, reduce processing delays, and give INZ a clearer picture of the business context and rationale for the role.
What Employers Need to Do Before 29 September
When the new portal goes live, draft job check applications saved in the current system will no longer be accessible or able to be submitted.
Employers with draft applications must either:
Submit them before 8:00 am, Sunday, 28 September 2025, or
Restart the process in the new system from Monday, 29 September 2025.
Updated guidance and support materials will also be available to help employers adapt to the redesigned system.
What This Means for Employers
The redesigned job check process represents a shift towards a more transparent, consistent, and faster AEWV system. By asking for more information upfront and providing clearer guidance, INZ aims to improve decision-making and reduce unnecessary delays.
For accredited employers, this is an opportunity to ensure their recruitment processes are well-documented and compliant, while also benefiting from a more streamlined visa application pathway.
