Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes to post-study work rights that will come into effect from 16 November 2026. These changes introduce a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa (PSWV), providing more pathways for international graduates to remain and work in New Zealand after completing their studies.
New Short-term Graduate Work Visa
A new Short-term Graduate Work Visa will be available for eligible international students who complete certain qualifications in New Zealand but do not qualify for a Post Study Work Visa.
The visa will provide 6 months of open work rights, allowing graduates time to seek employment and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
Hold a qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6, or 7.
Have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
Hold a qualification that does not qualify them for a Post Study Work Visa.
Have at least NZD $5,000 available to support themselves.
Apply within 3 months of their student visa expiring.
Not have previously held a Post Study Work Visa or a Short-term Graduate Work Visa.
Important Conditions
Graduates should be aware that:
The visa can only be granted once.
It cannot be extended.
Holders cannot operate their own business.
Holders cannot support a partner for a work visa or children for dependent student visas.
Employment must be undertaken under an employment agreement or contract for services.
This visa is designed as a bridge between study and employment, giving graduates an opportunity to establish themselves in the New Zealand labour market.
Expanded Eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa
Immigration New Zealand has also expanded eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa.
From 16 November 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa if they also hold a bachelor's degree, whether obtained in New Zealand or overseas.
This is a significant development because many Graduate Diploma students were previously unable to access post-study work rights despite holding prior tertiary qualifications.
Key Requirements
Applicants must:
Complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7 in New Zealand.
Study full-time for the entire duration of the Graduate Diploma.
Hold a bachelor's degree completed either in New Zealand or overseas.
What Do These Changes Mean for International Students?
These changes provide greater flexibility and create additional pathways for international graduates to remain in New Zealand after completing their studies.
For students considering vocational qualifications at Levels 5 to 7, the new Short-term Graduate Work Visa offers an opportunity to secure employment and potentially move into longer-term work visa pathways.
For students undertaking Graduate Diplomas, the expanded Post Study Work Visa eligibility may make New Zealand study options considerably more attractive, particularly for those who already hold a bachelor's degree from overseas.
Planning Your Study and Immigration Pathway
Choosing the right qualification has never been more important. The type of qualification you undertake can directly affect your eligibility for post-study work rights and future residence pathways.
Prospective students should carefully assess:
Whether their intended qualification qualifies for a Post Study Work Visa.
Whether a Graduate Diploma may provide access to work rights under the new rules.
Future employment and residence opportunities that may arise from their chosen programme of study.
