Immigration New Zealand has announced a new visa option for parents of New Zealand residents and citizens. The Parent Boost Visitor Visa will open for applications on 29 September 2025.
This visa allows parents to spend extended time with their families in New Zealand while ensuring they remain financially and medically self-sufficient.
Key Features
Stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years on a single visa.
Option to apply for a second 5-year visa (total stay: 10 years).
Multiple entries and exits allowed.
Parents and their partners can travel together or separately.
A compliance check is required after 3 years.
Note: This visa is for temporary stays only. It does not lead to residence.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
Apply and be granted the visa while outside New Zealand.
Meet health and character requirements.
Be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
Prove financial self-sufficiency (through funds, income, or sponsor’s income).
Purchase at least 12 months of health insurance upfront and maintain it throughout the stay.
Financial and Sponsorship Obligations
There are three ways to meet the financial requirement:
Sponsor’s income – at least the median wage to support one parent, higher for joint sponsors or additional parents.
Parent’s income – regular income equal to New Zealand Superannuation rates.
Parent’s funds – NZD $160,000 for a single parent, NZD $250,000 for a couple.
Sponsors play a key role in ensuring their parent’s stay is supported and compliant with visa conditions.
Health & Insurance Requirements
Applicants must meet health standards (no medical waivers allowed).
Insurance must cover: emergency medical care ($250k/year), cancer treatment ($100k/year), repatriation ($250k), and return of remains ($50k).
Continuous cover is compulsory — lapses could lead to visa cancellation.
